Oscars 97, Jahaaṅ, Carmina

OSCARS 97
I’m not usually one for awards shows… unless I’m singing in it!  What an honor and a rush it was to perform with some of my LA Master Chorale colleagues at the Dolby Theatre stage for the 2025 Academy Awards show. You can hear our voices and catch a glimpse of us in the boxes near the end of “Defying Gravity” sung by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, during Conan O’Brien’s opening number “I Won’t Waste Time” (I wasn’t on camera for this one), and featured on stage singing Mozart’s “Lacrimosa” during the In Memoriam segment. 🤩🤩🤩 If you were watching live, and you blinked, you might have missed us.

Jahaaṅ and Carmina Burana
This Sunday, the LA Master Chorale sings a sold out show at Walt Disney Concert Hall.  In the first half, we will be singing Jahaaṅ by our composer-in-residence Reena Esmail.  This brand new piece sets 5 Indian folks songs, touching on the feeling of ‘home’ in a different way.  We’ll be singing in Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali/Assamese, Marwari, and Malayalam.  For the second half, we’ll be joined by orchestra, LA Children’s Chorus, and National Children’s Chorus for Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.  This epic work sets 11th – 13th century texts that present a varied view of medieval life, including religious verses, social satires, and bawdy drinking songs.  It’s one of my favorites!
